To meet targets set by the Paris Agreement, all new construction must start to be Zero Energy (ZE) and designed to use no fossil fuel energy to heat, cool & light the building. By 2050 the entire built environment must be carbon neutral, and existing buildings must be re-designed to be Zero-Net Energy (ZNE). If we are going to stop global climate change, the time to act is now!
Although Zero net energy or ZNE is considered the future of building, Indigo has been designing ZE, ZNE and Resilient buildings since 1999. We are experts in creating the most efficient buildings possible, designing climate-adapted buildings that remain cool in summer and warm in winter.
INDIGO USES PASSIVE SOLAR STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE
ZE & ZNE
Indigo has focused our designs to create climate-adapted buildings by manipulating sunlight, wind, and building materials to remain functional and comfortable for occupants, while using the least amount of energy as possible. To achieve the Zero Energy Certification, Indigo uses what today’s architects would call “passive” solar strategies, as opposed to relying solely on “active” solar strategies, such as solar panels. Additionally, Natural lighting from skylights and windows allow daytime use without electric power. By combining passive heating and cooling techniques with the latest materials and modeling technologies, Indigo creates an indoor environment that serves human needs with a minimum of wasted resources. Adding to the green theme, we use local, recycled, and renewable materials whenever possible.
WORKING WITH THE POWER OF NATURE
We are a leader in designing Zero-Net Energy (ZNE) buildings of all kinds. Using multiple strategies, we are able to fine tune a building to the local climate, letting the building work with the cliamte. Our design focuses on taking energy from the outdoor environment thus using the power of nature to create a climate controlled interior. This climate adapted design keeps buildings passively heated or cooled 90% of the time. Natural lighting from skylights and windows allow daytime use without electric power. By combining passive heating and cooling techniques with the latest materials and modeling technologies, Indigo creates a beautiful indoor environment that serves human needs with a minimum of wasted resources.
CLIMATE CHANGE MEANS BUILDINGS MUST BE MORE EFFICIENT
As our climate continues to change and we see more extreme summers and winters, inefficient buildings will take more and more energy to heat and cool. Thus increasing the amount of fossil fuel needed to keep the interior climates at a livable temperature. This creates a negative feedback loop of ever more CO2 pollutants, causing global temperatures to rise even further. With this knowledge, Indigo has developed propriety techniques techniques to keep buildings passively cooled even in in triple digit temperatures of the Central Valley. Using strawbales as a building material is just one example of how we achieve super efficient buildings with excellent insulation properties.
