IMAZU BAY NEW TOWN PLANNING Fukuoka, Japan

This proposal for ecologically responsible development of Fukuoka's Imazu Bay tidal flats preserves important roosting grounds for endangered black-billed spoonbills and converts an existing network concrete rice field irrigation canals into more naturalized streams. Widened and re-vegitated with native trees and marsh grasses, these canals would bring native birds and animals back to the city while providing more sustainable drainage. Culturally important fireflies, missing from modern urban Japanese life, would repopulate in the habitat provided by the canals. The typical urban grid of houses, shops, and streets would co-exist with these green spaces.
