CHANG GARDEN Davis, CA

The Chang Garden uses the elements of the traditional Chinese garden: water, walls, stone, and planting to create a series of interconnected spaces for dining, playing and quiet contemplation. The sculptural strawbale garden wall is carved with low relief patterns referencing both Southwest Indian and Chinese aesthetic traditions.

The wall provides privacy, sitting niches, and places for the Chang's two kids to climb and perch. Contrasting with the garden wall are 120 tons of large stones, some carefully chosen and set to create intentional compositions, others mimicking mountain talus slopes. A pool, equipped with biological filtration system, provides habitat for fish and frogs. The planting is primarily California native plants with some drought tolerant exotic favorites of the owners mixed in.
